Coronavirus, EU pledges 411 mil euros to Western Balkans

TIRANA, March 25 – The European Union has pledged 411 million euros to assist the Western Balkan countries in the fight against the coronavirus pandemic

EU Enlargement Commissioner Oliver Varhelyi took to Twitter to announce on Wednesday that the EU is allocating “38 million euros for immediate support to health sectors and foreseeing over €373 m reallocation for social and economic recovery.”

The head of the EU delegation in Kosovo Nataliya Apostolova, specified that a total of 68 million euros from the fund will be allocated to Kosovo, of which 5 million euros are for immediate needs, up to 50 million are to ease socio-economic impact and up to 13 million euros are to support Kosovo’s state budget.

On Tuesday, the EU announced that it would pledge 50 million euros to help Albania fight the coronavirus outbreak and recover its economy, shortly after giving it and North Macedonia green light for the opening of accession talks.
