DURRES, Oct.25 – The Albanian Ministry of Public Works, Transportation and Telecommunication has terminated its working contract with the Danish company “Roehde Nielsen” which did not continue work for the deepening of the entering canal at the Durres port. Port director Eduard Ndreu said only 60 percent of the work has been accomplished in a time interval that was allocated for the entire completion of the process. The European Investment Bank gave three million for the financing of the rehabilitation of the Durres port. During the work done, the Danish company raised extra concerns about mines found on the sea bottom, concerns that led to judicial claims raised in the London Court. Presently the Albanian government is in a legal dispute with this company.
The Durres port authority reports that the pending case is an enormous negative factor that freezes some of the key processes that should be completed. One of the most important programs is to measure the real depth of the port canal in order to asses its operative capacity. The measuring of the port capacity is a complex procedure which will be realized with the support of the Albanian Hydrographic structures. The executive board of the Durres Port has already approved some 5000 as an extra financing sum to carry out the measurements.
