TIRANA, Feb. 25 – Greek police said they seized about 800kg of cannabis in the Filat area, a few kilometers near the border with Albania.

According to Greek police, the narcotic substance was found in a refrigerator driven by a Greek citizen, while the truck driver and a 40-year-old woman were arrested and the drugs and vehicle were seized.

Albanian Border Police said that from contacts with Greek counterparts, it turns out that the truck did not enter Albania and did not pass through the Saranda border crossing point. According to Albanian police, authorities at the Greek side of the crossing point confirmed that the refrigerated vehicle had loaded the narcotics into Greek territory.

Greek media sources, referring to Greek police sources, say the narcotics were imported from Albania and are being investigated as being transported through small loads inside the truck that was seized in the early hours of Monday morning.

Three days ago, Albanian police blocked about 35 kilograms of marijuana at the same border point and arrested the driver of the car, which later resulted to belong to an employee of the Albanian customs service.

The Albanian authorities ordered the immediate ousting of the customs officer in addition to the arrest.

The Albanian-Greek border continues to be the target of narcotics traffickers, who use not only border crossings but also the green border, to transport marijuana cultivated in Albania to Greek territory.

According to police data, based on narcotics operations, Greece is the second most popular destination of Albanian marijuana after Italy.
