Intesa Sanpaolo to merge Albanian operations; expand into North Africa

MILAN, Sep. 21 – Intesa Sanpaolo SpA (Nachrichten/Aktienkurs) plans to merge its two Albanian banks this year and is interested in expanding into the northern African region of Maghreb, said Enrico Salza, chairman of the supervisory board according to Thomson Financial. ‘Our objective is to merge Banca Italo Albanese and American Bank of Albania by the end of the year’ to become a leader in Albania’s banking sector, Salza said in an interview with the daily Il Giornale. Regarding the impact of the subprime crisis on the banking industry, Salza said Intesa has ‘no problems’ and could take advantage of any mishap suffered by a competitor.
