TIRANA, June 27 – Albanian President Ilir Meta called in special meetings on Thursday Prime Minister Edi Rama and opposition leader Lulzim Basha “to talk about the political situation in the country” – an invitation which was rejected by Prime Minister Edi Rama.

Meta’s request towards Rama comes at a point of extreme irritation between them, which reached its peak with Meta’s decision to cancel June 30 as the date of the local elections, followed by the Socialists’ start of procedures to dismiss him from office.

The relationship between the President and the PM has gone beyond institutional boundaries and this was also noted reading the communication from both sides regarding Thursday’s meeting called by Meta.

The letter that Meta’s head of cabinet sent to Rama’s counterpart noted that Meta welcomes Rama “every hour he can, starting from early morning at 05:00 until the hour 13:00, at His office in the Presidency.”

Rama’s response came through Twitter, where he also published Meta’s letter to his cabinet.

“Due to the electoral campaign being held under the presidential decree, where June 30 is the date of election, my cabinet has announced the impossibility for this meeting. But since Ilir Meta continues to play cards, here’s through writing: We have elections, I’m busy!”

A little later, Rama wrote another post.

“And since it came down to Ilir Meta’s game, I told you after the cancelation of the decree that after that madness, I expect another. I have a feeling he will do it, but for that we will talk from Monday and on, since now we only have one job: elections on June 30,” Rama wrote.

Following Rama’s reaction, Meta’s spokesman announced that “the meeting with Basha is scheduled to take place tomorrow at 09:00”, while reiterating Rama’s invitation.

“Being aware that Rama is busy with meetings, the President will be in the office tomorrow from 05:00 until 13:00 waiting for the prime minister to find time again,” said spokesman Tedi Blushi.

On Wednesday, the majority left the Parliamentary Commission of Laws, proposed the establishment of an investigative commission, part of the procedure provided for in the case when the president’s dismissal is required.

Next week, it is expected that parliament will approve the establishment of the Special Commission, whose duration may coincide with the completion of seats at the Constitutional Court, which should have the last word.
