TIRANA, Dec 10 – Police head Ahmet Prenci said that family violence could not be justified despite poverty and other issues related to that.
The country has completed the legal foundation on this issue, Prenci said at a seminar held by government authorities.
Family violence has turned into a main concern in the daily life of the country. It is nearly a daily news item.
During the first nine months of this year there have been 253 persons indicted for committing family violence, according to police sources.
Police said this year that 612 persons had asked for protection from violence in their family, compared to only 274 in 2007.
Some of the main reasons of family violence were considered to be the low level of awareness about the law and the family’s patriarchal mentality; fear of the victim in case of denouncing the violence; low levels of trust of public authorities, or lack of cooperation among authorities, media, civil society and other institutions.
