Self-service check-in launched in Durres Port

TIRANA, Sept. 25 – After the inauguration of the new terminal, passengers to the Durres Port are also being offered self-service check-in further easing the handling of passengers in the country’s biggest port. Eduard Ndreu, the director general of the Durres Port Authority says the border control point will be the only stop for passengers. Passengers only need to correctly process the data in their ticket and the machines in the ferry terminal will seal their trip.
Some 10 e-boarding machines have already been installed for passengers and car drivers.
Six other e-boarding machines will be used in times of high influx of passengers usually in summer or year-end holidays.
Some six ferry companies operate in the Durres port where around 850,000 passengers are handled each year. The inauguration of the new passenger terminal in Durres Port, the country’s biggest, has considerably increased the influx of passengers and made their handling easier. Authorities say some 220,000 Albanian and foreign passengers were handled through the port last August, when dozens of thousands of migrants mainly from Italy use Durres port return home for their summer holidays. The port also handled 327,000 tonnes of goods last August, up 28 percent compared to a year ago.
The terminal, a euro 21 million investment by the EBRD, the EIB and the Albanian government, was inaugurated last July. It has been designed to serve between 1.2 to 1.5 million passengers a year, 200,000 cars and 60,000 trucks.
