TIRANA, July 26 – As Albania’s parliament goes on vacation, it seems there will be no solution of the political crisis that has engulfed the country since the last year’s parliamentary elections.
The opposition Socialist party claims vote count manipulation and wants a partial recount, though not a change of results. The governing Democratic party says that move would be illegal.
Following intensive international, European pressure the two political groupings resumed their dialogue this month. But it seems that has given no results yet.
Representatives of the two main parliamentary groups held another round of talks last week trying to resolve the continuing political stalemate that threatens EU-related reforms.
Ruling Democratic Party top politician Astrit Patozi and the Socialist Party’s Gramoz Ruci focused on creating a commission to investigate the June 2009 general elections and on the panel’s methods.
But it seems that the Democrats and the Socialists cannot compromise on some issues.
Patozi and Gramoz seems to have failed to strike any deal before parliament’s summer recess begins early this week.
The European Parliament and the European Commission have made it clear to the Albanian politicians that compromise is a ‘must’ in the European democracy and failing to resolve such a crisis will negatively affect the country’s integration process into the bloc.
