Rome, Sep. 23 – The Albanian Environment, Forestry and Water Administration Minister has signed agreements worth 110 million euros with several donors for waste water treatment, ANSAmed reported. Waste water treatment systems are under construction or in the planning stages in the cities of Durres, Lezhe, Shengjin, Sarande, Valona, Kor衬 Tirana, and others. The prevention of pollution at the source, the continuous monitoring of drainage and fulfillment of standards for water quality are the main elements of the country’s Inter-Sector Strategy for the Environment. According to reports from the Italian Institute for Foreign Trade (ICE) in Tirana, the Albanian Minister for the Environment, Forests and Water Administration has undertaken a number of initiatives with international partners for an integrated management of water resources and for brining local legislation closer to its European counterpart. With special focus on the later, as part of the assistance provided by the INPAEL CARDS 2006 project, a draft law ”for water management” is being drawn up. Urban waste water, industrial and agricultural activities and solid urban waste disposal near rivers represent the main sources of pollution of surface waters and the most serious environmental problems for Albania.
