BURREL, April 7 – Two prisoners escaped from the high security prison in Burrel for less than one hour.
Following that, ten officials working at the prison, including its director, were arrested and accused of abuse of post or having been aware of the escape.
On Sunday, Fran Pal Marashi, 30, and Pashk Ndrec Lleci, 34, both sentenced to life imprisonment, escaped from the prison, which is considered one of the most secure in the country.
The two prisoners escaped by sawing through the bars of their cells, but they were caught just thirty minutes later.
The investigation of the failed prison break apparently revealed a plan for jailbreaks of more than 75 other prisoners.
Prison officials in Burrel had discovered a previous attempt to saw through jail bars one month ago, however after repairing the cell bars the incident went unreported to higher authorities of the prison system and the prosecutor’s office.
The Burrel high security prison houses Albania’s most dangerous criminals. Most of these prisoners are serving life sentences for murder and other serious crimes.
