ELBASAN, Nov. 7 – Level of pollution in the central city of Elbasan has significantly fallen, according to the environmental officials in the district. Beqir Kila said that during 2001- 2005 pollution was higher than the last 25 years or 3-5 times higher than the required levels. In 2006 pollution had a significant fall by 35-45 percent following some pressure exercised on the big industries in the area. In Elbasan there are two big plants, that of steel Kurum and that of chromium ECF who were considered as the biggest polluters. The government pressed them to install the proper equipment on their produced smoke. ECF has been pressed to install until the end of November another of such an e2uipment or it has been threatened to be penalized with harsher rules. Seventeen other businesses have been temporarily suspended their activities for air pollution. Another topic to be resolved is burning of remnants of the city that cause a great pollution.
