TIRANA, Dec. 5 – Prime Minister Sali Berisha met Tuesday with a group of ethnic Albanian leaders from the Presevo Valley, Bujanovc, and Medvegje in southern Serbia. Berisha said that the agreement they had signed with Belgrade under the auspices of the OSCE and NATO had to go ahead. Berisha also appealed to ethnic Albanians there to take an active part in the general elections, which are to be held in Serbia on January 21, “so that they give their contribution in the democratic development and strengthen their representation in Serbia’s parliament and international institutions where it takes part,” according to a statement. Albanians’ participation in the democratic processes was in their vital interest, said Berisha. He also said that Serb authorities should respect, recognize and guarantee the rights of Albanian citizens in these communes “because that’s in the interest of Serbia’s peace and stability.” (Tirana Times Staff)
