Free trade and immigration has left Albania’s agricultural sector in shambles.

TIRANA TIMES

TIRANA, May 18 – Much of Albania’s agricultural lands remain abandoned due to the high level of immigration and because of fierce competition that products from neighboring countries like Greece and Macedonia bring to the Albanian market.
Among the causes of the problem is also the fact that Albania is a member of World Trade Organization, according to a report by the local service of the German public broadcaster, DW.
Lack of economic policy for the protection of domestic production leads to lack of incentives for Albanian farmers. In local produce markets, most of what is sold comes from imports while domestic products are left to rot.
Lack of organization in large farms, a common brand, lack of infrastructure to come on the market in time are some shortcomings that prevent the sale of products of local farmers, according to the report.
