TIRANA, Sep. 2 – Last week British Ambassador Fiona McIlwham visited Burrel to participate in a televised discussion with women engaged in politics and public life.
During the discussion with local female leaders and activists, the Ambassador highlighted women’s rights and female engagement in public and political life as a core element of a democratic society and a driver of economic and social development.
McIIwham noted the 30 percent quota in the electoral code and supported ODIHR’s latest recommendations to improve its implementation.
She also talked about the UK experience in progressing women’s rights and engagement.
The British Ambassador was impressed by the good cross-party cooperation between Council members and the Mayor and their firm commitment to work together for the benefit of the citizens of Burrel. The Ambassador was delighted to see such a positive model of local governance being led by a woman.
That discussion is part of a series of televised discussions about women in governance and it will broadcast on the Network of Local Television during the autumn season. It is a project supported by OSCE, SIDA, and the Embassy of Netherlands in Tirana, implemented in many different towns around Albania.
