Government to offer big amnesty for the 100th independence anniversary

TIRANA, Oct. 10 – The Albanian government prepared the draft law on pardoning thousands of Albanian sentenced or prosecuted, a move made just ahead of the 100th anniversary of independence.
The government said that in total 2,546 persons would be pardoned if their sentence was up to two years imprisonment, or if they had one more year of prison to serve, if they were 55 years old for women, 60 for men and if under 18 years old.
Out of them 290 were in prison, 928 adults and 452 infants in pre-detention rooms and 876 persons prosecuted.
Prime Minister Sali Berisha insisted that all the pardoned persons had a low threat to the society and are not a danger to the public order.
That is a good move to be done at this moment of the country’s history but also a move that will make the prison authorities take a deep relaxing breath due to the over-population of the system.
