TIRANA, Nov. 22 – Tens of thousands of people volunteered across the country Friday joining the “Let’s clean Albania” government-supported initiative of civic organizations.
The volunteer initiative was was part of the country’s efforts to join the global campaign Let’s Do It World, a candidate for the 2013 UN Prize in the field of human rights and promotion of a clean environment worldwide. Some 107 countries have supported that initiative and until now 139 clean-up actions have been held worldwide.
During the day, across Albania students, officials and residents engaged in the work to clean trash and collect them in plastic bags later managed by the authorities.
The government also involved the armed forces.
Prime Minister Edi Rama expressed his full support and took part in a gesture show in one of the capital’s quarters.
“As citizens and servants of the country, we welcome this civic initiative which we hope will become a daily work,” Rama said. He thanked those who got involved in this activity that swept the entire country, appealed for this mission to become a tradition.
Trash seen in the cities’ streets and most important along the national roads are a serious gap in the country’s efforts to set tourism as a main source of income, experts say.
