TIRANA, Dec. 12 – In one of the largest drugs bust of its kind to date, Greek police have announced that they have netted about nine hundred kilograms of marijuana being transported from Albania via Greece to other European countries. The drugs were found in a hidden space in a truck.
Greek police said they arrested three young people from Albania accused of transporting the drugs.
Greek police said criminal networks have grown more sophisticated in hiding the drugs in hermetic areas that makes it harder for customs to detect them.
Police did not release the names of the Albanians arrested, but according to Greek police, the matter had been under investigation for more than a month.
Marijuana smuggling between Albania and Greece is a major headache for police on both sides of the border, with nine tons of the drug being seized in northern Greece this year alone.
Much of it is cultivated in the village of Lazarat near the Albanian city of Gjirokastra. The village has been for years a no-go area for police who fear an armed clash with the residents. Albania’s General Police Director Artan Didi said earlier this week that Albanian police is drafting plans to deal with the situation in the near future.
