TIRANA, April 7 – Albania was hit last week by a bad case of “the plakas” — as cold spring days are known locally — with April snow in the country’s interior and rain and cold temperatures in the western parts.
Heavy rain and snow caused travel problems and blackouts across the country, authorities said.
Rain caused flooding in Fier, Tirana and Durres. While snow in northeastern Albania led to the partial blocking of the main highway to Kosovo, which was also affected by a landslide that blocked one lane near the highway’s main tunnel.
Many rural roads were also blocked by snow and authorities were forced to return to winter emergency measures to clear them.
The bad weather also damaged the 110 KW power line of Fushe Arrez, leaving several areas in Kukes and Has without electricity.
