Police seize 1.8 tons of cannabis in southern Albania

TIRANA, Nov. 17 – Gjirokastra police says it has busted six operations of production and sale of cannabis in Memaliaj, a small town in southern Albania.

Police says it seized 1.8 tons of marijuana and arrested four people and announced it is looking for three others.

Operations began with the discovery of a small amount of marijuana in the house of a citizen and after police discovered other quantities on a hill near the town.

Memaliaj was the most affected areas this year from marijuana cultivation.

Police also arrested five citizens who were transporting dozens of kilograms of marijuana from Vlora to Durres.

Marijuana cultivation and transport, mainly to Italy and Greece remains one of the biggest challenges of the Albanian police.

According to official sources, the police have performed 1,260 operations against marijuana with 4,470 locations checked. About 3,000 police officers have been involved and 2.5 million narcotic plants have been destroyed so far this year.
