TIRANA, Sept. 12 – Albanian police are conducting operations across the country to seize properties believed to have been bought with the proceeds of crime.
Police seized nine villas and other residences, several commercial units and 15 luxurious vehicles under suspicions that these assets were bought with profits earned from criminal activities.
The total worth of the seized assets amounted to about 3 million euros.
Prosecutors are investigating to decide whether to take the cases to court to make the seizures permanent.
The police operations come after a call by Prime Minister Edi Rama to investigate all people who show off assets they cannot justify with their legal income, part of fighting corruption and organized crime efforts.
