TIRANA, Nov. 1 – Prime Minister Edi Rama announced this week the launching of a countrywide effort to reform the water supply networks, mimicking the tough reform of the electricity sector.

He warned all citizens with unlawful connections to the tap water grid to cut them off voluntarily or face the repercussions seen during the electricity theft purge, which saw tens of Albanians thrown in jail.

Rama made the announcement at the meeting of the Socialist Party Parliamentary Group.

Rama’s rule of law platform with electricity came under criticism for targeting the poorest Albanians. One man committed suicide in prison after he was arrested for reconnecting to the electricity grid when he was cut off because he couldn’t afford to pay the bill.
