Some 42,000 people were impacted by the floods, including large economic losses in agricultural land and livestock
TIRANA, Feb. 16 – Authorities have started to distribute financial and material assistance to farmers who were negatively affected by the recent flooding in Vlora and Fier counties, Prime Minister Edi Rama said.
Rama said that some 42,000 people were impacted from the floods who suffered the loss of some 2,000 sheep, about three dozen cows and some 50,000 chickens. Some 5,000 hectares of agricultural land is still under water.
A group of farmers in Fier also said their strawberry plantations destroyed.
The government started to distribute sheep among the farmers who had lost them.
Rama said the government would keep the pledge of offering assistance to farmers who were affected by the latest flood, as well as previous by floods in the past.
Floods earlier this month forced hundreds of people from their homes in Albania.
A 38-year old woman drowned in Albania after she was swept away from the yard of her home by floodwaters near Pogradec.
Some 600 families were evacuated in four southern districts in Albania after flooding covered more than 17,000 hectares and killed thousands of sheep and cattle.
The government said it also negotiated with private banks to suspend farmers’ loan payments from the farmers affected areas for two years to allow them to rebuild their businesses.
