TIRANA, April 10 - A recent survey conducted by the Albanian Helsinki Committee and the Open Society Foundation, where 416 citizens from the entire country were interviewed, found that 63 percent of Albanians do not believe in the ongoing justice reform.

The survey was centered on the following four questions: “do you believe you are sufficiently informed on the vetting process?” “Do you sufficiently understand this process, in case you have followed it?” “if you have followed the process, do you believe it is righteous based on the results so far?” and “do you believe the vetting will really clean the justice system and make it better and more trustworthy for citizens?”

For the first two questions, the answers were mainly positive, where 67 percent of the surveyed said they are informed on the vetting process and 85 percent of those who have followed it said they understand it.

However, when it comes to believing the vetting process will be a just and impartial process which will improve the justice system, the majority of those surveyed - 63 percent - answered negatively.

According to these results, one of the vetting process’ main goals - to increase trust towards an independent justice system - has failed, because most of Albanians, despite their support towards the country’s eventual EU integration, don’t believe that the justice reform will bring an improvement to the country’s state of law.

These results match several surveys conducted lately showing that more than half of Albanians - around 60 percent - want to leave the country, looking for a better future and standard of living.
