Italian police detain an Albanian among others in cocaine operation

TIRANA, Jan. 13 - A considerable amount of cocaine was seized in Genoa, Italy on Monday, where four people were detained, among them an Albanian who was living illegally in the country. According to Italian media, the cocaine came from Brazil, and it was found hidden inside a container carrying granite slabs when it arrived to Italy. The drug operation was given the code name ‘Samba 2020’.

The operation was carried out by the Guardia di Finanza and authorities at the Port of Genoa who seized around 330 kg of cocaine following a routine check due to suspicions about the origin of the transported goods. The value of the cocaine was said to be around 100 million euros.

According to Italian media sources, the authorities allowed the container to pass through the port security and followed the accused until they moved it into a warehouse in Massa Carrara, where police forces intervened immediately.

The Albanian citizen did not have a dual Italian citizenship nor did he have a residence permit, despite living in Italy for some time. However, prior to the operation, he did not have a criminal record either.
