Serbia will become one of the first countries in the world to get the Pfizer vaccine, after being also one of the first countries to sign a contract with Pfizer. According to an official statement by the Ministry of Health of Serbia, the first 5,000 doses of the vaccine will be available on 21st or 22nd of December, and the first category to benefit will be elderly people in nursing homes. On Thursday the Serbian health authorities issued the permit for Pfizer vaccine after the US-based company and their German partners BioNTech applied for the registration earlier in December.
In November, Serbian president Vučić confirmed that Serbia signed a contract to receive 350,000 doses of the Pfizer vaccine by March 2021. Serbia has received also the Sputnik V vaccine from Russia, although the number of doses was limited only for laboratory tests. Meanwhile, after Prime Minister of Albania Rama went personally to Pfizer headquarters in New York to negotiate the vaccine arrival in Albania, there is still unclear when the vaccination process will start in the country, although many from the government, including Rama, have expressed their optimism for the first months of 2021.
