TIRANA, March 5 – The main opposition Democratic Party of Tirana Mayor Lulzim Basha has made a request to take Prime Minister Edi Rama to a parliamentary hearing following recent political events inside the ruling Socialist Party.
They also want Parliamentary Speaker Ilir Meta to resign and have started a formal process to have him impeached, despite of lacking the number of needed votes to do so.
Both requests come as one of Rama’s lawmakers, Tom Doshi, was expelled after criticizing the government and made allegations that Meta had ordered his assassination — allegations authorities said are false.
The parliament’s session on Thursday was unusually tense with harsh language and verbal attacks used by politicians which has disappointed international representatives.
“The OSCE Presence in Albania has followed with disappointment the deterioration of the political debate in recent days. We urge all politicians to refrain from inflammatory language and actions and to allow the country’s institutions to function in the best interest of Albania’s citizens,” the organization said in a statement.
