TIRANA, Dec. 6 – Adriatik Llalla will serve as Albania’s new general prosecutor, after being nominated by Albania’s president Bujar Nishani and getting the support of the majority in parliament.
Llalla served as the head of the High Inspectorate for Declaration of Audit of Assets before taking the post of outgoing general prosecutor, Ina Rama, whose constitutional term ends.
The Socialist Party said it will abstain in the voting about the new General Prosecutor, saying it is not against the candidate, but against the procedure. The Socialist Party and others believe Ina Rama’s mandate extended until next year, something on which the Democrats and the president disagreed. The dispute came after different interpretations of the law. The Socialists wanted the constitutional court to rule on the issue.
Llalla is a former prosecutor, and has previously served as deputy head of Tirana’s prosecutors office.
Albanian general prosecutors did not have defined term limits in the past until constitutional changes in 2008 set them at five years. The opposition had argued the current prosecutor’s mandate should have been extended until April 2013, five years after the constitutional changes took place.
Nishani said he valued the long experience of Llalla and his consensual election as General Inspector. He added Llalla had also been praised by the international partners for its independence and consolidated functionality.
