TIRANA, Oct. 20 – Albania’s national football team has qualified for the France 2016 European Championship finals, a historic step for the tiny western Balkan country, and some of the merit goes to its Italian coach.
But now Giovanni de Biasi’s fate as head coach is in jeopardy as he is negotiating a new contract with the country’s football federation.
The coach wants a raise, but federation officials say they might no longer be able to afford the successful coach.
There seems to be an informal debate on his future through the media.
De Biasi says that his contract is automatically renewed and also hints that his salary should be much higher now that Albania also earns quite a lot of money for the qualification and television rights.
The Albanian football federation, including its president Armando Duka, is saying that de Biasi should not expect a much higher salary.
De Biasi says he won’t make his salary public because “no other coach would come to Albania if they know about it.”
