POLICAN, Dec 17 – The military disposed of 113 kilograms of dangerous military chemical elements it owed from the former times of the communist regime.
The disposal was made in Polican military plant specialized in such operations.
The chemicals were at the depots of the plant becoming a dangerous spot for possible threat of explosion not only to the employees but also the inhabitants in the area.
They were formerly used by the army in different explosive armaments.
Top military officials, including Defense Minister Gazmend Oketa were present when the elimination of the chemicals was done Tuesday.
The Polican plant is usually used to dispose of excess ammunition the army collects from its depots all around the country.
Albania is under a deep reform of its army along the efforts to become a full NATO member.
Earlier this year NATO gave the membership invitation to the country and later signed the membership protocol, which is to be ratified by all member countries before Tirana may hope to become a full member, likely at NATO’s next summit in April.
