TIRANA, Dec. 20 – The assassination of the ambassador of Russia to Turkey has led to the increase in security measures for foreign diplomats in Albania, with authorities focusing on Russia’s embassy in particular after international press reported the embassy building in Tirana’s Bllok neighborhood was included in a target list by the ISIS terrorist group.
The list, published in the British press, included Russian consulate addresses around the world, including the Russian Embassy to Tirana.
Russian Ambassador to Turkey Andrey Karlov was assassinated in Ankara by Mevlut Mert Altintas, 22, an off duty police officer.
Ever since the attack, Albania’s Intelligence Services and State Police have increased security measures around all foreign embassies in Tirana, local media reported.
Dhimitraq Ziu, deputy director for public order and safety in Tirana said security measures will be tougher around the embassies of United States of America, Germany, Turkey and Russia.
Ziu said that authorities have no information on a possible risk against these embassies, however, these security measures will be intense until the New Year holidays.
