Albania, Macedonia seek to increase economic ties

TIRANA, April 18 – Strengthening the ties and increasing the economic cooperation was the main focus of the talks during a visit by Macedonia’s Economy Minister Bekim Neziri to Tirana.

In the meeting with Albanian Speaker Ilir Meta, the two officials stressed the necessity to intensify economic cooperation between the two countries, also noting that inter-parliamentary relations were very important in the mutual cooperation.

During the meetings, Neziri talked about common economic priorities of both countries aiming at also improving the atmosphere in the region, as a required first step toward full membership into the European Union which both countries aim to join one day.

Neziri is an ethnic Albanian member of Macedonia’s coalition government. About a third of Macedonia’s population is ethnic Albanian.

The country has been mired in a political crisis recently that has is also starting to threat its inter-ethnic harmony.
