TIRANA, April 5 – The Ministry of Defence has commemorated the 7th anniversary of Albania becoming a member of the North Atlantic Treaty Alliance (NATO) through a special activity held in Tirana’s main boulevard this week. The city was decorated with Albanian and NATO flags for the occasion, while the Albanian armed forces exhibited their latest military equipment as part of the activity.
Defence Minister Mimi Kodheli considered the event as one of the greatest achievements in terms of national security and thanked international partners for the support given to Albania not simply regarding NATO membership, but also for the assistance offered for the country’s armed forces throughout the years.
“Today Albanian soldiers give their valuable contribution in Afghanistan and Iraq. At present, peacekeeping missions have become a tradition for the Albanian armed forces. Today Albania generates peace and stability,” said Kodheli during the ceremony.
Albania became a NATO member on April 7, 2009 after receiving an invitation to join the alliance at the Bucharest Summit the previous year.
Next month, Tirana will host for the first time the NATO parliamentary assembly.
