TIRANA, May 12 – The Albanian Foreign Ministry reported that Tirana authorities had concluded the second round of negotiations with NATO officials in Brussels regarding the country’s upcoming membership.
Albania’s negotiating team, headed by Glori Hysi, held talks on technical and legal aspects of the membership as well as financial and human resources the country should have as an alliance member.
Together with Croatia, Albania was invited during NATO’s April summit to become a member as early as next year.
The completion of these negotiations opens the way to signing the protocol of acceptance this coming July.
Then, if all goes according to plans, NATO member countries will each need to ratify the July protocol, a process that officials hope to have concluded before NATO’s 2009 summit in which it will celebrate its 60th anniversary.(Tirana Times Staff)
