Albania officials admit corruption

TIRANA, April 12 – Albania’s former Deputy Transport Minister Nikolin Jaka and several senior officials have pleaded guilty to corruption.
Lat September, Jaka was charged with illegally fixing a series of tenders for road projects.
Along with Jaka, eight other people were arrested, including Ilir Berzani, the general director of roads at the Ministry of Transport, other officials and three businessmen.
The officials have been charged with giving preference to several companies among those bidding for construction contracts for a number of road projects.
Transparency International claims Albania is among the most corrupt countries in Europe and that corruption is an endemic part of life in the country. (Tirana Times Staff)
