The ranking places Albania is the same safety zone as Italy, France and Britain, and above neighboring Greece.
TIRANA, Aug 5 – Albania is peaceful by global standards, raking 65th out of 162 countries in the latest Global Peace Index, according to a report issued by the Institute for Economics and Peace.
The ranking places Albania is the same safety zone as Italy, France and Britain, and above neighboring Greece, where a deep economic crisis has caused civil unrest.
Albania, a NATO member and an EU candidate, suffered some of the effects of the European economic crisis but never went into recession like many of its neighbors.
All Western Balkan countries do well in the report נranking in the same zone as many EU members נwith the exception of Macedonia, which ranks 87th. Ethnic tensions in Macedonia have been on the rise recently, which likely affected the report.
In general, the world has become less peaceful every year since 2008, the report noted.
The Global Peace Index tries to measure the relative position of nations’ and regions’ peacefulness. It is the product of Institute for Economics and Peace and developed in consultation with an international panel of peace experts from peace institutes and think tanks with data collected and collated by the Economist Intelligence Unit.
