TIRANA, July 10 – Albania’s government is preparing an action plan and a new strategy to prevent and root out religious radicalism and extremism at a conference last Friday
Interior Minister Saimir Tahiri said that the fight against extremists was high on the cabinet’s agenda, adding that Albania must preserve its model of the religious co-habitation.
“Our country has come up with an action plan on the fight against extremism, increasing cooperation with all stakeholders who have contributed to the fight against terrorism,” Tahiri said.
U.S. Ambassador Donald Lu also took part at the National Conference on
Religious Radicalism and Violent Extremism in Albania, which aimed to examine the risk factors for religious radicalization and producing reliable data to inform policy-making at the national and local levels.
“We believe that the work of NGOs can and will make a difference in keeping our societies safe,” Lu said, urging the government to use reports issued by civil society in preparing its strategy.
