TIRANA, Jan. 20, 2022 – All schools in Albania will shut down Monday through Wednesday next week due to the expected subzero temperatures, the country’s education minister has announced.
Weather forecasters are predicting temperatures to go as low as -17 degrees celsius next week, temperatures that Albania hasn’t seen in decades.
The minister said that the shut down order could be revoked if the forecasts prove inaccurate.
Schools in Albania are also currently seeing a massive wave of infections with COVID-19’s Omicron variant, with some reporting as much as half the pupils and staff staying home due to infection.
However, authorities have decided that the risks to physical health are lower than long term damage to studies and mental health of children already held back during the two years of the pandemic, thus the schools will be kept open.
