TIRANA, April 9 – The Albanian government decided to send a military demining unit to Bosnia on Tuesday to be part of the Althea NATO peacekeeping mission there.
The decision sparked immediate reactions from the local media the following day, writing with irony that a country that suffered at least 24 dead and some 300 injured at an ammunition disposal factory near the capital was now sending its experts to another place.
The media added that women and children were recently allowed back to work at the Gerdec factory which exploded March 15 scattering thousands of tons of artillery shells throughout the area.
It was also reported that untrained personnel were used by the private company at Gerdec at a time when the army had the proper units to take care of such ammunition. (Tirana Times Staff)
