TIRANA, Feb 9 – Italian Interior Minister Roberto Maroni said that his country would like to apply with northern African countries the same model as that with Albania in preventing illegal immigrants from crossing into Italy through the Mediterranean Sea.
Rome hopes to get the same results as those with Albania to counter illegal immigration from countries of North Africa.
“I was in Tunisia and Libya in recent days – said Maroni to Radio News24 – to apply this dual system: economic aid to development for border controls.” He said that no more Albanians were going to Italy through the sea, adding that 90 percent of the landings in Lampedusa arrive only by Libya.
Italy has already signed a deal with Libya hoping to get the same result obtained very effectively with Albania.
