TIRANA, Aug. 29 – Turkish-owned fixed line operator Albtelecom has extended the coverage map with internet service and very soon will cover the whole Albanian territory. Albtelecom and Motorola, through the company Verso have signed a cooperation deal with a considerable amount for the supply and installation of Motorola Canopy Fixed Wireless Broadband Access technology for the extension of the coverage area with internet even in the remote areas of the country, where this service until now has been impossible. Albtelecom, main partner of Motorola in the region, has a consolidated cooperation even with other important projects in the future.
Under this project, any household or business will be able to enjoy the benefits of internet with a good quality, no matter where in Albania. The project will serve also to the education system of Albania as it will increase the quality of internet service in the schools of pre-university system in remote mountain regions.
The implementation of the project has started recently and until now as many as 350 villages are already covered with Albtelecom’s internet service by Motorola Canopy Solutions. The total number of inhabitants of these villages is about 420,000. Albtelecom says it will install the special wireless internet modem device in the premises of the customer and internet will be ready immediately. The number of villages which is covered with internet service of Albtelecom is increasing every day. After just a few months, more than 1300 villages in the whole Albania will have full access and with high quality of internet service, even in the remote mountain areas in which there are no fiber optic cables yet.
The system Motorola Canopy, implemented by Albtelecom, is the best choice fixed wireless access technology which is based in license free frequencies. Thanks to OFDM (Orthogonal Frequency Division Multiplex) technology used in Motorola Canopy solutions, Albtelecom’s internet service in these rural areas will be with very high quality and will not be affected by the difficult conditions. A similar system is implemented in other countries of the region with similar features with those of Albania, but the technology which is chosen by Albtelecom is the latest and the best one.
General Director of Albtelecom, Dr. Orhan Coşkun, emphasized that the mentioned project is part of other important projects of Albtelecom, to extend the coverage area and the widening of the optical fiber network in the whole Albania, including even the remote mountain regions. Having as intention the offer of high quality services in a very short period of time, Albtelecom through this project will offer internet service with a very good quality and favorable prices even in the remotest zones of the country.
“Internet is changing the lives of people in a very positive way. However, because of many factors such as economy of scale, investments costs per user etc., there is a phenomenon also which is called “Digital Divide”. This digital divide will increase the gap between the people who can reach to internet and who cannot. We as Albtelecom, feel proud and happy that through the project Motorola Canopy which is realized within a short period of time, decreasing this digital divide between the urban and rural areas of Albania as it will bring affordable internet services to all Albanian citizens. It is very important for Albtelecom and for Albania as it is a very important step towards “Digital Albania”. We have some other projects which will make internet more accessible and will share these projects when they are ready with the public. Now we will be offering at the every corner of Albania broadband internet thanks to Motorola Canopy solution. Everywhere at Albania, every corner and every zone of Albania they will have access to affordable broadband internet,” Mr. Coşkun emphasized.
Meanwhile Mr. Ian Bayly (Beili), Motorola’s Director for Europe said that the company he heads is specialized in broadband Internet service and in cooperation with Albtelecom Motorola is implementing the latest technology. “We are very excited to be associated with the Albanian schools project with our partner Albtelecom. We are going to be bringing wireless broadband to all schools, 1600 schools across the country. We have got a lot of experience delivering broadband into schools and we are very pleased to be here in Albania. The network, the infrastructure that we are rolling out is next generation wireless, our capacity of up to 45 Mbs, and we are able to upgrade that very easily with Albtelecom up to 85 mbs within a year, so there is lot of capacity for these schools to use and we hope this is going to stimulate education in Albania”, Mr. Ian Bayly said.
Last July, Albtelecom signed an agreement with Italy’s Telecom Italia Sparkle (TIS) which will increase internet speed by up to eight times. The deal will increase the transmission capacity of the Bari-Durres fiber-optic line to 20 Gbps, from 2.5 Gbps currently, Albtelecom said in a statement.
