Army general arrested on corruption charges

TIRANA, May 16 – Brig. Gen. Syrja Gjoka was arrested Friday by military police after being accused from prosecutors of abuse of post.
The general had been head the logistics brigade of the armed forces, and he is accused of abusing with some 6 million leks when he led the military unit in southern Kucove town and allegedly abused with them in destroying seven objects belonging to the army.
He is accused of falsifying signatures of some tender commission members.
That is the first arrest of a senior military official at a time when the country is listening increased voices against the fight against corruption.
Former Defense Minister Arben Imami is also accused of abuse of post and of public money and is under investigation.
