TIRANA, June 25 – Austria will assist the Albanian government in preparing the digital system of the National Register of the Civil Office.
The 1.3 million euro, two-year agreement was signed Wednesday by Interior Minister Bujar Nishani and Austrian ambassador Klaus Derkowitsch.
This is considered another step toward the compilation of voters’ lists and a more solid basis for the preparation of identity cards and biometric passports.
The voters’ list has been a continuous problem and believed to have been exploited by political parties in post-communist Albania.
The new ID and biometric passports have become an obligatory condition for Albania’s aspirations to have visa-free access to European Union member countries.
