Robbers make away with millions of euros in cash, authorities suspect they had inside help

TIRANA, Feb. 16 – Police are questioning suspects after three masked gunmen made away with millions of euros in cash after robbing a security unit that was transporting money from a Tirana bank.

The robbers fired rounds into the air to scare and overpower the security guards as they were leaving Union Bank near old Tirana train station area, security camera footage showed.

The robbers then grabbed money sacs, and stole one of the security vehicles, before ditching it a few kilometers away. The vehicle they took and drove away was found abandoned in Paskuqan, a small town not far from Tirana. Police believe that they had other collaborators waiting for them in Paskuqan, to help them escape from the police.

The exact amount of money that they managed to take is still unknown, but local media reported perpetrators got away with two bags of cash with a value of as high as 2 million euros.

Police have questioned bank employees and witnesses at the scene, including checking the security cameras. There is strong suspicion that robbers had help from the inside the bank informing them on the best time and place to find and get the money.

Police detained all the security guards that accompanied the money and the bank itself has fired its eight of its security employees as the theft occurred right as the money was leaving the bank to get loaded into the armored transport vehicle.
