TIRANA, May 25 – Bankers Petroleum Albania has started to compensate the families in the village of Marinza whose houses were damaged following the gas eruption near one of its wells on April 1, the Canada-based company said in a press release.

Bankers said it would compensate families financially for all their loss and the process has formally started. Bankers said 44 houses needed serious repairs while 66 needed some repair.

State officials and Bankers’ executives visited the families affected from the explosion and evaluated the damages.

Bankers did not give the amount it will offer those who suffered damages, but said it would abide by the official estimates.

The company added it would continue to invest in the area in order to improve the lives of the residents and offer more jobs for them.

Bankers maintains the explosion did not have a negative impact on the environment, but Albanian authorities have found high levels of toxic chemicals in the area, which has been an active oilfield for decades.

Many of the residents have asked to be relocated.
