TIRANA, Sept. 13 – Democratic Party leader Lulzim Basha said this week the agreement of May 18, between him and Prime Minister Edi Rama is dead, because of what Basha said was the manipulation of the June 25th elections.
In the speech held in parliament, Basha also said that an electoral reform remains vital to the future of the country and would make it harder to rig elections.
Prime Minister Edi Rama had expressed hope several times after the elections that the agreement reached between him and Basha on May 18th could be kept alive to pass important reforms that require cooperation between the opposition and the ruling majority.
Basha’s answer has been clear, however.
“The essence of the 18 May agreement was free and fair elections. Hence, and the June 25th elections marked the death of this agreement,” Basha said. “Rama has a coalition with crime and the buying of votes with drug money and corruption killed the deal and reaffirmed Albania’s number one problem: stealing and alienating the will of Albanians for the sake of Edi Rama’s personal and private power.”
