TIRANA, April 15 – Interior Minister Lulzim Basha made a visit to Brussels to meet with top European Union officials to discuss on the visa liberalization process for the country.
Albania expects to get the positive answer from Brussels on the visa-free regime at its summit in June 2 in Sarajevo.
Albania and Bosnia did not join Macedonia, Montenegro and Serbia last year to get the status.
In Brussels Basha met with European Parliament officials and also with the European Commission Commissioner Cecilia Malstrom of the Interior Affairs and Justice.
At the parliament Basha made an introduction of the requests of the road map set for the country’s visa-free regime.
During the talks the minister got positive reactions from the European officials on the undertaken steps expressing their willingness and hope that the visa-free regime would be proposed for the tiny western Balkan country.
But the European Parliament lawmaker Tanja Fayon, a Slovenian who has been heading the efforts for the visa liberalization for Albania and Bosnia, warned that the political deadlock in the country could also turn into an obstacle to the visa-free process.
She said that European parliamentarians were considering sending another team to mediate the political deadlock which may harm the visa liberalization process.
