TIRANA, May 31 – Police reported they had found 100 kilograms of cannabis sativa during a raid in the Gjirokastra region last week, arresting three people, including a student and a former member of the National Guard.
The drugs, from the village of Lazarat, were likely bound for Tirana, police said.
Last week also Interior Minister Lulzim Basha visited Lazarat and insisted Albania is committed to fighting drug cultivation, in order to meet the EU criteria for visa-free travel.
In another operation, a joint one with Kosovo police, there were arrested three suspected members of a drug ring. One was arrested in Tirana; the other two were stopped by authorities in Prizren, southern Kosovo.
Police suspect that the ring smuggled drugs from Albania to Kosovo, and owned a stash of 110 kilos of marijuana that abandoned in November not far from the capital.
Kosovo authorities confirmed the arrests and the suspects’ apparent connection to an international drug trafficking network. EULEX says the drugs were destined for Western Europe.
