TIRANA, July 13 – Caritas, the Catholic humanitarian agency, has agreed to assist the Albanian Interior ministry and police in funding the opening of a shelter for the victims of human trafficking.

They signed an agreement on cooperating in strengthening the capacities of the police and improving the system of protection of the victims of trafficking in the country.

The U.S. embassy also has assisted with funding such a project.

During the next two years, Caritas will assist police with training and also improving the shelters where the victims are questioned and then kept. Those shelters are close to the border crossing points.

Human traffic continues to be a problem for the authorities as many Albanian women are still trafficked to western European countries to be exploited.
