TIRANA, Aug. 31 – Albania will hold its census in October and it seems that will remain one of the main topics discussed in the tiny western Balkan country.
There are many controversies on the census due to two of its questions _ that on the ethnicity and religion.
The Red-And-Black Alliance, a civic organizati0on, has turned it into a main topic of the daily agenda shouting loud that Greece favors such a way of the census to show an increase of its minority in the country. Almost a million Albanian living in Greece as immigrants may very much like to declare themselves as Greek not to have any problems with the authorities or the employers there.
The issue was also mentioned the Eid-al-Fitr day, marking the end of the fasting month of Ramadan, when some Muslim leaders in the central city of Elbasan openly asked that authorities holding the census should also include their representatives. Or they may call for a boycott of the census, they warned.
The same request is also done from the Greek minority representatives in the south.
The government says the census is important only for the registration of the country’s data and it does not have any impact on the voters list or any other level of administration.
Census remains in the daily agenda
