TIRANA, Oct. 19 – Civil society activists and a group that ran an independent campaign in the Tirana mayoral elections have created a new national party — Sfida per Shqiperine. (Challenge for Albania in English.)
The party is made up of a group of intellectuals and civil society activists with the aim to “challenge the old parties and shock the the system that is undermining the country,” said Blendi Salaj, one of the founders of this political force.
The new party stems from a campaign to elect Gjergj Bojaxhi as an independent candidate for Mayor of Tirana last year.
He was able to get 16,000 votes, the highest among independent candidates.
The party said it will put well-known and respected candidates in all of Albania’s largest cities in the next parliamentary elections. It has vowed not to ally itself with any of the major parties before and after the elections.
